As we enter the second year of battling the Covid 19 pandemic, the shape and condition of a post-COVID world may seem a little uncertain. Despite the heroic efforts of healthcare workers, policymakers and citizens around the world, additional waves and new variants have extended the fight, with caseloads varying widely across time and geographies.

This pandemic not only spotlighted the gaps in pandemic preparedness on the continent, but it also exacerbated inequality within our societies, exposed the hidden fragility of our systems and foregrounded the weak productive capacity of our economies. Africa has a unique role to play in this renaissance – securing a better future for its own citizens and contributing new ideas, approaches, and solutions to the global community.

Well-executed responses to the COVID-19 pandemic provide an opportunity to reposition African countries and the region for greater growth and self-reliance. This policy brief proposes initiatives that can be considered by policymakers in Africa to help reduce the impact of the pandemic on its people and also use this as a springboard to secure a better future for Africans
